Toward a 21st Century National Data Infrastructure for the Common Good

Led by the Washington Evaluators, August 17th, 12:00-1:00pm ET

Discussion Topic:

This webinar will discuss two recently released consensus reports from the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine’s Committee on National Statistics series: Toward a 21st Century National Data Infrastructure. The first, Mobilizing Information for the Common Good, sets a vision for a national data infrastructure for social and economic research, to include evidence building. The second, Enhancing Survey Programs by Using Multiple Data Sources, discusses how the use of multiple data sources can improve the quality of national and subnational statistics while promoting data equity. It explores implications of combining survey data with other data sources through examples relating to the areas of income, health, crime, and agriculture. This series is supported by the National Science Foundation.

Facilitator:
Melissa C. Chiu is the Director of the Committee on National Statistics (CNSTAT) at the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine. CNSTAT advises the U.S. federal government and the nation on the knowledge and practices that will lead to improved statistical methods and information upon which to base public policy. Studies evaluate specific programs and as well as address system-wide and cross-cutting issues such as data infrastructure and principles and practices for federal statistical agencies. Before joining CNSTAT, she spent 15 years leading data policy, governance, analytics, and production in the U.S. federal government at the Department of Veterans Affairs, the Census Bureau, and briefly in the Office of Management and Budget’s Statistical and Science Policy Branch (Office of the Chief Statistician of the United States). Melissa served on the Washington Evaluators Board of Directors as Program Chair (2019) and Secretary (2020-2021).
